Drug-Disease Contraindication and Drug Allergy DUR (drug utilization review) are pharmacy level responsibilities. Please be sure your pharmacy is complying with this requirement by relying on Pharmacy Information Management System (PIMS) or manual review of patient medical and drug history for problems that could result in a drug-disease contraindication or a drug allergy. Pharmacy Prospective DUR is audited by the state and MedImpact and must be maintained in the patient’s record.
MedImpact’s claims processing checks for prospective drug utilization review (DUR). It is the responsibility of the pharmacist to use any applicable alerts to discuss with patients. Currently there are NOT edits during claims processing looking for drug-disease contraindication or drug-allergy DUR. Both drug-allergy and drug-disease prospective patient counseling is a requirement. Drug-disease and drug allergy information may be contained in electronic prescriptions or pharmacy patient records. Pharmacists should consult state pharmacy policy regarding the frequency of asking patients about drug-allergies.
