Affected states: West Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania

Beginning March 8, 2018, Highmark will enhance their management strategy of opioids. In addition to the current quantity level limits, Highmark will continue to do their part to reduce unnecessary extended use, overuse and abuse of opioids. The new opioids policy will limit first-time prescriptions for immediate-acting opioids to a 7-day supply and no more than 14 days in a 30-day timeframe. The new policy will also limit new prescriptions for extended-release opioids to members who have recent history of using long-acting opioid medications. These policies will take effect on March 8 and will only impact Commercial members.
