OptumRx: Documentation and Refill Requirements Change for Schedule II Drugs

Effective Date: Immediately

Author: Jessica Bohm/Monday, July 2, 2018/Categories: CAPS

Due to the enactment of the Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Act of 2016, (CARA 2016), approved on July 22, 2016, OptumRx would like to provide an update on a change to the partial fill requirements for Schedule II controlled substances. While the language for both Section 309 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 829) and the DEA regulations for partial fills has not yet been updated to reflect the new requirements of CARA, we anticipate revisions will be issued sometime in the near future. Pharmacy providers should ensure their documentation standards are consistent with Federal legislative and regulatory requirements (including the recently enacted CARA requirements). Please take a moment to read through and familiarize yourself and your pharmacy employees with the requirements as they pertain to each individual pharmacy setting. The new CARA legislation with the updated language can be found here: https://www.congress.gov/114/plaws/publ198/PLAW-114publ198.pdf.
