As previously communicated, effective August 1, 2017, Aetna Better Health will cover Basaglar KwikPen as the preferred basal insulin. In addition, Aetna Better Health will cover Lantus vials as preferred basal insulins.  All other basal insulins will require prior authorization.  Aetna Better health also covers pen needles for patients that have paid claims for a product requiring pen needles. If you receive a rejection for a pen needle prescription, please resubmit the claim after the Basaglar KwikPen prescription has paid.
 
We are providing this notice so that you may adjust your pharmacy product inventory as needed to accommodate for this change in coverage. In addition, this information should assist you when reaching out to prescribers regarding rejected claims for non-preferred basal insulins.
