Dear Healthcare Professional: On December 1, 2015, the FDA announced that Insulet initiated a voluntary Field Safety Notification of some lots of the OmniPod insulin management system due to a slight increase in the reported cases in which the OmniPod’s needle mechanism failed to deploy or there was a delay in the deployment of the needle mechanism. The incidence of this issue in the affected lots is approximately 1%-2%. Per Insulet, the higher rate of failure in the OmniPod insulin management systems could result in the interruption of insulin delivery which can cause hyperglycemia, and if left untreated, can result in diabetic ketoacidosis. To date, the affected lots have resulted in 66 medical device reports of which 3 required medical intervention.
